With winter fast approaching in Australia I though I would share with you a few of my favourite winter herbal teas. These recipes work a treat and use really simple ingredient you can find in your spice rack, fruit bowl or local supermarket.
This is an excellent immune tonic to sip on throughout winter, or if your feeling a little run down. Use for prevention or treatment.
2 cups water
2 teabags of black tea
1/2 lemon with peel, finely sliced
1/2 an orange with peel, finely sliced
2 tbs grated fresh ginger
1 tsp apple cider vinegar
raw honey, to taste
Pour boiling water over all ingredients, let sit for 15 minutes and drink. Works really well made in a thermos – you can carry it around and sip as needed all day.
Soother Tea (for sore throats)
Use basic Immunitea recipe and add:
1 pinch cinnamon
1 pinch cloves or 10 whole cloves
1 pinch star anise or 3 whole
1tsp dried sage
Optional: 1 tsp slippery elm – stirred in at the end
This tea has all the benefits of the Immunitea with added anti-microbial and anti-septic actions. This tea is also locally analgesic/pain-killing and very soothing for especially sore throats. Perfect if your prone to losing your voice or if your required to do a lot of speaking. Cover all ingredients with the boiling water, leave covered for 15 minutes, strain and sip as needed.
Chilli Kick (for congestive colds and coughs)
1 tbs fresh grated ginger
1/2 lemon – juice and rind
1 clove of garlic roughly chopped
Chilli – as much as you can handle (use either fresh or cayenne pepper)
1 tsp raw honey
Promotes circulatory stimulation, has a decongestant action and an anti-biotic activity in the lungs. Heat all the ingredients, drink the liquids and then, if you can handle it, eat all the remaining pieces.
